ZMEI3 is a Romanian-German musical group that created in Berlin a new style - Rough Romanian Soul, which combines folk-jazz influences with punk rock attitude and avant-garde sound with psychedelic accents.
In 2015, the ZMEI3 band recorded their first album with producer Grammy (Tinariwen), Ian Brennan. The album "Rough Romanian Soul" was recorded live in a mountain village and released by Six Degrees Records in San Francisco. In 2016, ZMEI3 sang at the biggest World Music Festival in the UK, WOMAD Festival, and held a live session at BBC Radio 3, as well as three BBC exclusive interviews. In 2017, the world premiere for PRI Public Radio International in USA, documentary "ZMEI3 - A Trip To Transylvania", directed by German journalist Roman Rhode from Der Tagesspiegel.

‘ZMEI3 (pronounced zmay-tray) is the band of Romanian immigrants whose beautiful and heartfelt music rises from the harsh realities and struggles of a post-Communist rule.
The powerhouse voice of ZMEI3 is Paula Turcas, a soprano opera singer who gave up classical music in the pursuit of a more truthful artistry grounded in the struggles of everyday life. The leader of the band is guitarist Mihai Victor Iliescu, who created the Rough Romanian Soul concept and style. Their sound is made all the more unique by featuring vibraphone virtuoso, Oli Bott, for their lead instrument.
The band’s name is inspired by an ancient Romanian anti-hero, misfit dragon – a rebellious figure, who rarely prevails, but remains committed to his ideals.’
