Ionut Radulescu

Echoes of Romania- RAMA, an Alianta project

 

Ionut Radulescu is a designer and illustrator that lives and works in New York City. He has a MA in Arts Illustration and Graphic Design from SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design). He has worked as a designer with agencies such as Pearlfisher, Prophet, Kayser-Roth, and the Frye Company.

Eagle (Acvila) is an illustration for the magazine DOR / Decat o Revista, issue no. 14 for a text by Lavinia Gliga about the eagle and its ecosystem in Romania. 

Diary (Jurnal) is an illustration for the magazine DOR/ Decat o Revista, issue no. 8, that illustrated Philip Ó Ceallaigh’s essay “Victima” (“The Victim”), translated into Romanian by Alina Purcaru.  The diary mentioned in the title of Ionut’s illustration as well as in Ceallaigh’s essay is that of Romanian playwright and novelist Mihail Sebastian (1907-1945).  Ceallaigh’s essay won First Prize in the 2012 “Superscrieri” creative writing and journalism competition in Romania. 

Romanian (Romanesc) is a type illustration– an exercise in understanding Romanian identity – calls to mind archaic Romanian calligraphic styles.  Ionut drew upon multiple sources of inspiration, including vintage publications such as Viata si Opera lui Miron Costin or Poporul Romanesc and covers of old editions of books by the Romanian novelist Mihail Sadoveanu (1880-1961).
