Echoes of Romania- RAMA, an Alianta project

Patrick Mateescu is a sculptor and ceramist that lives and works in New Jersey. His work ranges from small-scale cast porcelain to large-scale stoneware monuments.

Public art in numerous locations worldwide, including the UCLA campus and outdoor venues in multiple Romanian cities (Bucharest, Galati, Mangalia, Targu Mures, etc.).

Recent news: The artist’s monograph, including an analysis of Mateescu’s work by the essayist and art critic Ionel Jianu, was recently published by Simetria Publishing House (Bucharest, Romania).

The piece Transilvania Flower was installed, in May 2016, in the square in front of the prefectural government main building in the Romanian city of Bistrita Nasaud.

Regarding Column for My Homeland: one way of engaging with this piece is to think of it in relation to the heritage of Brancusi’s oeuvre, especially the motif of the column, the monumentality of the piece, and the modular approach to sculpture.  The Romanian version of the title is “Coloana dorului de tara” (literally “the column of longing for the homeland”).  Patrick’s column was installed outdoors in Rachitoasa, Romania, the artist’s birthplace, in 2011.
