Corvin Art, an art consultancy based in Washington DC, seeks designs for mile markers along the Via Transilvanica trail in Romania. The selected designs will be carved into mile-marking obelisks by local Romanian stone carvers. These obelisks will join the ones that have already been installed, to complete the signage along the last few hundred miles of the trail.
The jury will select 25 designs based on artistic merit, fit for the purpose, and technical feasibility. The submittal deadline is March 1, 2022.
The jury is led by Dr. Sonia Coman-Ernstoff, Audience Engagement Strategist at the Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Art. The jury includes Liz Adams, an American figurative painter based in Paris, and Margot Bernstein, lecturer in the Department of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University.
"To have an international echo, and to be able to attract artists from the USA, a place of great inspiration to us in terms of long-distance trails is beyond my and my team’s imagination. It makes Via Transilvanica truly stand for diversity and variety. The team at Tășuleasa, myself included, is looking forward to seeing what new and exciting designs will come out of this amazing initiative. Good luck to all of the artists and let your imagination travel!”, declares Alin Useriu, President and Founder of Tasuleasa Social, initiator of the Via Transilvanica project.
“Having their design carved into a mile marker along Via Transilvanica is a unique opportunity for any artist. These stones will greet and guide travelers for centuries to come. Guardians of the trail, they will be keepers of the artist's uttering and a witness for our shared peripatetic humanity", declares Cristian Ianculescu, Romanian-American sculptor, a partner in Corvin Art.
