'Ibelin' documentary at Sundance Film Festival

I had the incredible opportunity to attend the world premiere of Benjamin Ree’s documentary “Ibelin” at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, earlier this month. Over 102 minutes, I immersed myself in the life of Mats Steen, a Norwegian quadriplegic gamer who tragically succumbed to Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy at the age of 25. The documentary revealed that Mats experienced most of his interactions and formed profound friendships virtually, playing the World of Warcraft.

Witnessing Mats’ journey from adolescence to young adulthood through his in-game connections, his impact on those he interacted with, and his genuine bond with his virtual friends filled me with warmth. As the documentary concluded, my handkerchief was soaked, and everyone around me was wiping their eyes. Watching this film was somehow uplifting, showing me that regardless of the hand life deals you, you can make a difference and live your life to the fullest possible.

After the screening, I had the privilege of briefly meeting Mats’ parents, Trude and Robert.

Check it out on Netflix if you get a chance! It’s worth it!

Thank you, Benjamin Ree, for making this documentary. I bow to Robert Redford for his vision when creating this film festival. It has a fantastic vibe.
